Embracing otherness. When I first heard this theme, I thought, well, embracing otherness is embracing myself. And the journey to that place of understanding and acceptance has been an interesting one for me, and it's given me an insight into the whole notion of self, which I think is worth sharing with you today. We each have a self, but I don't think that we're born with one.

You know how newborn babies believe they're part of everything; they're not separate? Well that fundamental sense of oneness is lost on us very quickly. It's like that initial stage is over -- oneness: infancy, unformed, primitive. It's no longer valid or real.

What is real is separateness, and at some point in early babyhood, the idea of self starts to form.

Just imagine for a moment that you aresitting in a magnificent concert hall. The conductor waves hisshiny baton with a graceful swing through the air. A beautifulmelody floats slowly around you

You sit quietly with your eyes shut, yourheart open. The delicate vibratos of the violins carry you to amood of heavenly bliss. An airy solo of the flute draws you to theimagination, the notes flow like some jumping swallows dancing andsinging calling for the coming of Spring.

I like music from my childhood. My fatheroften says when I was a baby I would never go to sleep withoutsoft, beautiful lullabies crooning around my ears . Now music is apart of my life. When I feel tired, disappointed or in low spirits,I usually turn to music. Music, nothing but>

Music comes with us. Where there is life, there is music. Where there is music, there is hope. It lies ineveryday life, in everyone’s life, in everything we see, ineverything we hear-- in the rhythm of the sea, in the whisper of agentle wind, in the melody of a bird’s singing, in the harmony ofvillage chimes. You can hear music wherever you may go . A man whodoesn’t knowmusic will lose half the world. A nation that pays little or noattention to music will be a sad nation. A world without musicwould be the>

So dear friends, let’s open our arms to embrace musicand enjoy it throughout our lives. Love music and lovelife.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, Today I'm going to talk about sandstorm.

Sandstorm is a kind of bad weather witch is becoming increasingly common in Northwestern China, and it usually happens in spring and fall. Though I'm only 13, I have experienced it and suffered from it quite a lot.

I'm sure most people still remember the sandstorm that happened last month. It swept across the large area of 11 provinces and caused a great loss to our nation.

As you can see on TV, when a sandstorm comes, the wind blows strongly with dust and sand. Sometimes trees are even broken down in half, and little birds cannot find their homes. Sometimes clouds of dust blur the vision, and little kids cannot find their ways. It's like the end of the world.

When a sandstorm occurs, our classroom is filled with dust and sand. My poor teachers! They've breathed in enough chalk-powder. Now, they have to take in much dust. My poor fellow classmates! They told me they were almost dying.

We love beautiful spring. We cherish bright sunshine. But sandstorms destroy all the lovely things. Yet we know it is Mother Nature's revenge on what we have done to her. In order to see blue sky and sunny spring again, we should plant more trees and more grass to protect the environment. And it is not too late if we start right now.

Though it's a hard job to fight against the sandstorm, it is the battle we must fight, and it is a battle we must win!

  Thank you!

Our little portion of oneness is given a name, is told all kinds of things about itself, and these details, opinions and ideas become facts, which go towards building ourselves, our identity. And that self becomes the vehicle for navigating our social world.

But the self is a projection based on other people's projections. Is it who we really are? Or who we really want to be, or should be?So this whole interaction with self and identity was a very difficult one for me growing up. The self that I attempted to take out into the world was rejected over and over again.

And my panic at not having a self that fit, and the confusion that came from my self being rejected, created anxiety, shame and hopelessness, which kind of defined me for a long time.

  Honorable Judges, fellow students:

  Good afternoon!

Recently, there is a heated debate in our society. The collegestudents are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receiveexceptional education at extraordinary places. But will we be ableto face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Willwe be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to acceptthe responsibility of building the future of ourcountry?

The cynics say the college students are the pampered lostgeneration, whi(征集网)ch would cringe at the slightest discomfort. But thecynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learningabout how to live independently. We help each other clean thedormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part timejobs to supplement our pocket money.

The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and weneglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynicsare wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, wetreasure justice, and we seek truth.

Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood typetested in order to make a contribution for the children who sufferfrom blood cancer.

As college students, we are adolescents at the critical turningpoint in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism orfaith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the futureof our country. I believe in all my fellow classmates. Though weare still inexperienced and even a little bit childish.

I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet anychallenge and take>

Hello everyone. Today, I’dlike to talk about“Howto improve our English”.To be honest, I’mreally happy to stand here and say something about learningEnglish, even if I’monly a beginner of English.

As everybody knows. English is an intern- ational language. What’smore China has ente- red the WTO. Therefore it’snecessary for us to learn it.But“howcan I improve my English”youmay ask. Well, I have some useful tips that I’dlike to share with you.

Firstly, make sure that you pay enough atte- ntion to yourpronunciation and intonation. Otherwise, you might make yourself alaughing stock. For example,“CanI use your bike?”yousay,“CanI use your back?”“Passme the case, please”.yousay,“passme the kiss, please”Obviously, here you mispronounced the two words “bike”and“case”.Thatwill certainly cause misunderstanding. Besides, tones of differentvoice can also mean difference. For instance,“Londonbridge is falling down, fall- ing down, my fairLady”,“Londonbridge is falling down!”youare excited, again“Londonbridge is falling down, falling down, my fairLady”,“Londonbridge is falling down”youare so sad, right?

Secondly, practice makes perfect. Don’tbe afraid to make mistakes when you practise speaking English.>’tbe shy, try to be thic- kskinned and speak up !

Finally, in order to improve our English, we need to be patient ,Anyway, learning English takes time, so you must have a strong willand enough patience, Recember“Romewas not built in a day !”

That’sall .thank you for your time.

Future is a process, not a result.Prepare the best;enjoy the most. The future is now-it is my firm belief as well as my philosophy. Can we do nothing but dream about good luck?without hardwork, can we be kissed by good fortune?

If we really want to have a bright future,we have to take advantage of everything we possess now.if we really want to have a bright future,we have to do well what we can do now.if we really want to have a bright future,we have to race the clock.

Just remember:The future is now, many many nows make up the future!

Please allow me to end my speech with a short poem, which can best express what I want to tell all of you:

Yesterday is history,Tomorrow is mystery,Today is a gift,So,we call it “present”!

My dear fellow students, respectable judges,I wish everybody present a bright future.

I wish a fruitful future is waiting for you !

  Thank you !

And I know what you're thinking. You know, I'm up here bagging out inspiration, and you're thinking, "Jeez, Stella, aren't you inspired sometimes by some things?" And the thing is, I am. I learn from other disabled people all the time. I'm learning not that I am luckier than them, though.

I am learning that it's a genius idea to use a pair of barbecue tongs to pick up things that you dropped. (Laughter) I'm learning that nifty trick where you can charge your mobile phone battery from your chair battery. Genius. We are learning from each others' strength and endurance, not against our bodies and our diagnoses, but against a world that exceptionalizes and objectifies us. I really think that this lie that we've been sold about disability is the greatest injustice. It makes life hard for us. And that quote, "The only disability in life is a bad attitude," the reason that that's bullshit is because it's just not true, because of the social model of disability.

No amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp. Never. (Laughter) (Applause) Smiling at a television screen isn't going to make closed captions appear for people who are deaf. No amount of standing in the middle of a bookshop and radiating a positive attitude is going to turn all those books into braille. It's just not going to happen.
